In kilt wearing, even in considering the "historically correct" kilt protocols of those who work hard to wear the kilted man's attire correctly, the one rule that comes to us from history is that there really are very few "rules" that were not shaped by the fashion dictates at large during a rather narrow span of history. The ultra formal "uniform" kilt outfit came from the era of Victoria, as did MANY rules and regulations to restrict and conform. HOWEVER, the truth is that what became the kilt of the Victorians differed drastically from the far earlier and infinitely more practical earlier kilts that were quite literally a bolt of cloth that was the epitome of practicality, sometimes worn as a kilt, but also used as a tent, a blanket, a towel or many other practices required in earlier life. The anglicized, militarized "tank" came MUCH later.

Throughout the world and throughout recorded history men in many countries, regions, and cultures have worn kilt-like garments of a broad range of fabric materials and styles. The whole realm of tartans, clans, and the ultra formal uniform of the highland bands and regiments that became the "recognized" formal kilt of the proud Scots has quite rightly become emblematic of a distinguished people and many who treasure those traditions, but that which has lately been thrust into the forefront of menswear as one of the hootest new entries into mens apparel.

For the far broader market the "kilt" that has soared in international popularity is considerably simpler, far lighter, and applicable to virtually any work, sport or recreational environment thanks to a broad range of colors, new fabric options, a broader range of accents and practical accessories and prices that cost a fraction of what a tailored, tartan tank would require. None of this reflects negatively upon the Victorian Kilt, but has actually spurred an upswelling in interest as buyers of casual, utility, or sports kilts quite often are led to an interest in the Scottish variety. However, even here, there are now choices including lighter materials that are warmer in hotter climates as well as very well made offerings that were crafted on sewing machines rather by hand.

If anything, the "rules" of wearing a kilt and even what is a kilt seem to be changing drastically as huge numbers of men around the world have elected to purchase the extremely affordable alternatives merely because they look sharp, are very economical, and overwhelmingly comfortable! Whatever your individual prference and need, today's kilts for today's men follow only ONE rule:

WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE!
