I'm not a computer whiz by any means.  But I have listened to my computer expert in the advice he has given me over the years.  The best advice I believe he has given me is to connect my computer to a battery backup and with built in surge protection.  Whether you live in an area that is frequented by thunderstorms or not, it is a wise idea to keep your computer powered by one of these devices. 

  Many people do not understand the fluctuations in the power coming into your home or business.  What happens is when the next door neighbor or the large factory down the street starts a large appliance or piece of machinery it causes a sudden drop in power throughout the lines feeding everyone in that area.  The battery backup helps to balance this power and keep these up or down spikes from ever reaching your computer.  My  first custom built computer has had a battery backup attached to it from day one.  We have just recently retired it after about 7 yrs. of reliable use. 

  There is no doubt that computer manufacturers don't want you to know this so they can keep selling you more computers.  There are many more factors in maintaining a healthy well oiled computer, but this is just one of the key ingredients to making that computer perform at it's peak for you.
