KVM for 'Keyboard, Video and Mouse' switches come in various configurations and are really all about the cables.  The switches themselves are very useful, but the cables that inter-connect two or more PCs to a single keyboard, video display and mouse are the backbone and 'big' expense of setting the switch up.  For two-computer switching we like the ease of use of a unit like the Belkin 2-port PS2 (<--connector style) unit that is relatively inexpensive and which can be triggered via keystrokes on your keyboard.  Our sever rack is still using an old ByteLAN Protec unit that connects four PCs with either ISA or PS2 style cables and connectors. Larger units handle as many as 32 connected PCs via what are called KVM-over-CAT. 5 connections, which they say can be cascaded to allow accessing as many as 1024 servers from a single KVM station.

If this kind of solution makes sense for you we suggest you consider:

  1. The need for ISA, PS2, USB connectors or some mixture (we've used converters on PS2 cables to make ISA connections, but had no luck trying to use PS2 to USB connectors)
  2. Your desire to keep things simple (two 2-PC devices may be easier to use and manage than one 4-port device, or vice versa)
  3. Shopping for the switch and cables together.  The pricing on cables alone tends to be higher than bundles with switches and cables.
  4. That ISA and PS2 cables are essentially extension cables, so you may have some suitable cables already.
  5. Preparing to be patient during set-up, as the slightest error in connecting cables can make for a frustrating testing procedure to identify and connect the errant cable.
  6. Learning the 'feel' of your device once installed.  USB KVM switches hesitate while recognizing a switch request, so it's not hard to find yourself needing to hesitate past the switch-speed you might expect.
