As reported earlier, Jonathan Saunders' capsule collection for Target is a hit! The Mondrian-esque tunic dress/top is already sold out in some sizes on line and in stores. New items have been trickling into stores all week -- although they’re not as consistently fab as the initial ones, there are some very wearable pieces.
My favorite is definitely the Ponte Leather Jacket ($59.99). Although this piece isn't highlighted in the ads, it's the most expensive-looking one in the collection...trimmed in (as far as I can tell) real leather. (The online description says leather, although the garment tag doesn't specifically indicate leather. It does pass the 'sniff' test, though.) Body of the jacket is a stretchy, soft blend of rayon/nylon/spandex (69/27/4) that's tapered through the waist for a beautiful silhouette. Exposed zip front and cuffs give this a decidedly Italian designer feel--this mixes beautifully with your Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Cavalli pieces.
Saunders uses the same fabric for the Ponte Mini Dress ($32.99) that can be worn layered, alone or as a tunic top with tights or jeans. Besides the expensive-looking fabric, other designer details include Princess seaming down the front, a covered button-front placket and cuffed short sleeves.
The Scottish-born Saunders obviously understands weather...his warm and waterproof Neoprene jacket ($59.99) features an innovative fabric normally found in wetsuits worn by surfers and divers. Prada and Burberry have both used neoprene recently in men's/women's jackets, so I was super surprised to see it turn up in a Target collection. Bonus: an elegant graphic Saunders original print lining. The 3/4 cuffed sleeves indicate Saunders' intention for wear indoors, but I think it will probably be too warm. I'll be wearing mine outdoors (thank goodness for my short arms!) to fend off the chilly San Francisco fog.
Based on the initial photos, I was most excited about the Blue Whale dress ($29.99). Awful name aside, royal blue is my fave color (even the color of my wedding gown!) and I scoop up every piece I can. The dress, however, is definitely not as cute as in the photos...the fabric is a thin woven cotton that wrinkles easily and doesn't hold the inverted pleats from the banded waist. As a result, it looks sloppy and cheap...not sure that even a can of starch would save it. )-:
The only other real disappointment I've seen so far is the Cilantro color used in one of the sweater dresses and as trim on the Teal Sweater Dress ($29.99). In the online photos, it looks greener than in person--it's actually a more drab olive color. The color issue is exacerbated by the seaming on the shoulders and cuffs--the overall effect is bulky, military and totally incongruent with the lovely teal in the rest of the dress.
