First Spouse coins have had Up's and Low's in the secondary market thus far, and it has been expected! Today marks the 3rd addition to the First Spouse Program by introducing the "Jefferson Liberty", so called becuase Thomas Jefferson was not married, but widowed during his term as our nation's Third President. The Depiction on this coin is not of his wife who had passed on, but of the depiction of Lady Liberty that was on circulating US coins of that era.
As predicted, the Jefferson First Spouse sold out in another record US Mint sale...just a few hours, and boy was the web site tied up, took me over an hour to get my order in with full time effort, and trying the US mint phone lines are no better, in fact, I never was able to speak with anyone there.
The Martha Washington and Abigaile Adams versions had a similar sell out, although you were able then to buy 5 of each version and today the Jefferson only allowed one of each...so the want value in these coins has not faltered. The after market prices on the Washington and Adams grew fast to nearly $900 a coin in the first few weeks, then slipped to today's price of hovering around the $500 mark.
Why has this happened? Because at this point, the market is flooded and the scare is on for those who were trying to make a quick buck and those that have now seen the price drop and are too scared to buy.......But, have no fear my fellow collectors and investors. These coins will remain at this low price for only a few more short weeks...so now is the buying time...they will go way, way up!
Here is a chart from the November issue of Coin Values Magazine on the First spouse coins. They do not currently list the prices for the Jefferson Liberty, but the prices will be around the same...most likely more.
$10 Gold First Spouse
2007-W Martha Washington MS65 - $600 MS68 - $700 MS69 - $1000 MS 70 - $1500
PF65 - $600 PF68DC - $700 PF69DC - $1000 PF70DC - $1500
2007-W Abigail Adams MS65 - $600 MS68 - $700 MS69 - $1000 MS70 - $1500
PF65 - $600 PF68DC - $700 PF69DC - $1000 PF70DC - $1500
What this chart tells me is this: #1. Any ungraded First Spouse coin is worth about 50% more than when it was purchased from the mint. And really that's a worse case senario, most will grade at 69 or 70, go to NGC's website and you'll see you've got a great shot at a 69 or 70. #2. you can buy an MS70 or PF70 right now for below $600 on Ebay...that's a $900 profit for each coin you buy graded that way for the true value of the coin. 3. These coins are still new, collectors and collections are still forming, these coins are not only on the rise, but will continue to rise for years and years, but never will you be so lucky again to buy them at the low prices they are going for on Ebay right now.
With the introduction of this new Jefferson liberty, there are two things that will happen to not only this versions of the coin, but also the others in the series. 1. The Liberty versions, and there will only be 4 of them, will be sets collected for both the First Spouse Series and those looking to simply have a Liberty set, this will bring the prices up and set premiums for Liberty Versions. 2. The higher prices and higher demand for the Liberty, will increase the value of the other versions in the set and create a real "Hard to own set". Remember, these coins in each version are all only sitting around 20,000 coins in the whole world. Collectors begin collecting every day, these coins and this set will be real gems to own, not only now, but in the years to come. My prediction: These coins will sell in original sets in 10 years when the set has closed out in excess of $100,000...and that is for your roughly $16,000 initial investment. Tell me a better investment than that, and I'm in. Good luck and watch your Gold Shine, buy now, sell later...It's a Golden Investment!
