Java moss is a rootless aquatic plant with simple growth requirements. It reproduces vegatively with broken pieces growing as new plants. It attaches itself to surfaces such as bog wood and rough stones. It can be tied down until attachments form and trimmed to encourage thick growth along the flat surface.

Like other aquatic plants, Java Moss will help keep the water a little cleaner by removing wastes from the water as part of its growth process.
Due to it's fine nature it can collect pieces of detritus from the water column but these can be removed by vacuuming over the secured java moss or shaking out loose clumps in a bucket of water.

Java Moss is a great plant for Siamese fighter jars and bowls as it needs minimal lighting and does not need planting in gravel.

When floated Java Moss makes an excellent spawning site for Australian rainbow fish, tetras and white cloud mountain minnows or fish with similar spawning requirements.

Java Moss is suited to unlit aquariums or well shaded regions of lit tanks. Like other mosses (Hypnaceae) Java Moss is a shade dweller by design. Java Moss is great for aquarium owners who are always killing plants because they do not have a dedicated aquarium light. Java Moss is also useful in well lit situations where it will grow faster with correct nutrients and environmental conditions.

Java Moss thrives at 17- 26 degrees c making it useful in both unheated and moderately heated tanks. Java Moss prefers clear water but will tolerate a dirty tank for a short time. Java Moss prefers that PH does not shift to far from neutral.

When purchasing an average amount to expect is a medium sized clump about the size of a tennis ball. Your clump of Java Moss can spread out or be broken into a few smaller clumps.

You may find a very small amount of brown strands in your Java Moss clump which is due to the natural growth cycle.
