I have compiled a few interesting and informative facts about Japanese Cloisonne Ware.
My information is based upon an original Sato Ware Co. 1950's brochure, several 50's vintage vases and the Sato-Shippo web site.

  • Sato-Shippo is a company that started manufacturing Cloisonne Ware in 1936 and continues to be in business today.
Some designs continue to be in production:

NEW - Sato Vase.  This design is called "Plum Stuffing"

The new vase has a lot in common with this older model:

OLD - A 1950's Sato Vase.  This design was called "Plum Blossom All Over"

  • Sellers and buyers, here is a 50's era SATO cloisonne mark. The circle design was part of a seal that originally said Quality Guaranteed and Trade Mark.
Sato
Not to be confused with
Ando

  • During the 1950's, 1st grade finished Sato pieces were stamped on the bottom, there may be seconds from the same era without marks.
  • Transparent Red color is called Pigeon Blood. The 50's pigment is made with GOLD, but it is always RED. Many sellers describe any Cloisonne color as being Pigeon Blood.
  • Top and bottom edges of finished SATO pieces were trimmed with silver or (more commonly) nickel silver bands.
  • The base of 50's Sato Ware is sheet copper.
  • Jade or Apple Green color was not available in the 50's Sato product brochure, but is currently being produced:

This is a NEW wireless design, Sato Vase.

  • More than 17 Named designs / combinations were available in Sato's 1950's brochure. No wireless designs were offered.
