Pros: lightweight (4.8 oz), in-line volume control, durable, good sound, comfortable, highly compatible, highly efficient, compact on-ear design, foldable, wearable with glasses, reasonable price ($30-$40 on eBay)
Cons: Bass heavy, delicate wires
Best Uses: With my computer, home audio, music, portable devices, travel
Accessories included: airline and 1/4" stereo phono adapters, travel pouch
I'm an audiophile and a gear head, and I've worked as a sound engineer for at local venues and outdoor concerts.

You get a lot of sound for your money with the JBL Reference 410 Headphones.  OK they are not like my 20 (or 30?) year old Fostex T10s, but for cans that weigh 4.8oz (135 grams) they really belt out the sound. They also provide excellent noise isolation so forget about the noise-canceling models (it's a marketing gimmick anyway).  The cord is light and delicate too but the in-line volume control is smooth and noiseless.  My guess is that the cord or the hinges (or my eardrum) will break before the drivers blow up.

I think JBL took a different approach when they designed these headphones. They probably figured that consumers are so used to hearing boom cars rolling down the street that they would like the boom in their ears.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  It's probably the trademark "JBL sound".  Who knows.  So needless to say that these headphones put so much bottom end in your ears that you need to turn it down to make it sound just right.  This to me is a good thing.  I'd rather turn something down than have to boost and make up for what's not there.  So on my laptop in Windows Media Player 11 I put 31Hz and 62 at -6, 125 and 250 at -9, 500 at -3, and leave everything else at 0.  On my Mac in iTunes, I can set the equalizer settings and save them as a preset (pretty cool).  Keep in mind that accomplishing these settings on a portable CD or MP3 player may be close to impossible.  The EQ settings will also depend on your computer model since there are so many different audio cards.  Look, even a 250 lb. EAW concert loudspeaker ($5000 just for one cabinet) you see at a concert needs equalization (signal processing), so I don't mind doing a little eq'ing to get it just right.  I've used them for a few hours at a time and never experienced any signs of ear or listening fatigue (ears ringing, warm ears, tracks sounding different after a while, loss of high frequency).

Did I say these cans will get really loud?  They are highly efficient (they require less audio power than others to get the same volume) and they will get so loud that they can (and probably will) blow your membrana tympani (ear drum) if you want to before they blow up.  I've turned these puppies up on my desktop and laptop as far as I could stand it and the sound will not distort or break up (unlike the Bose Triports).  This is a plus if you are having trouble getting any volume out of your portable device, and you'll probably get more playing time from it since you don't have to turn it up as loud.  But be careful.  Save your ears and do not overstimulate or overload them.  You can cause permanent hearing loss before you know it has happened.  I don't think they will reach 180 db (point at which your eardrum bursts and is damaged forever) but I'd say 120-130 db is a good guess.

There you have it. Try 'em, EQ 'em, and maybe you'll like 'em too.  I'm sure you'll need to watch for fakes soon.
