Before you start receiving negative feedback for poor shipping practices consider this. The average mail bag can weigh 170 pounds, shipping cart 300 pounds, shipping conveyors speed of 7 miles per hour with drops from up to 6 feet. Airmil bags can be dropped from the cargo hold onto a trolley and stacked 3 high, your auction item will be on the bottom. Is that Swiss Watch in the plain envelope going to make it? I don't think so. Recently I recieved some delicate audio components shipped in the original box with a generous amount of bubble wrap and air-bags securely packed in a nice sturdy oversized carton. I received a box of junk. Why? Once the original package is opened the blister packs and foam are sometimes discarded. It is quite difficult to put everything back the way it came, some are better at this than others. My package reminded me of the broom and dust-pan approach (sweep it into a pile, scoop it up in the dustpan, pour it into the box). These small pieces, some of them quite heavy, are like little hammers bouncing around inside that nicely packed box. Growing up in the 60s one only had to watch a variety show or sit-com to see this trick where the magician took the elegant watch from some unsuspecting participant, placed it in a drawstring bag and then proceeded to pound on it with a hammer. The trick, and it would have been a good one is when the watch was removed from the bag it was ticking and in perfect condition. The only problem, the trick never worked and always ended with the magician being chased off the stage by the angry participant. Pretty funny for everyone to see but devistating for the poor guy with the watch. Kind of like opening a box from an eBay auction that was carelessly thrown together. You don't have to use expensive materials, newspapers, plastic grocery bags both can make a nice cushion. Remember that nice electric razor you dropped on the floor (2 1/2 feet to the floor) that never worked again? How much cushion do you think it would take to send a similar razor from Boston to Oakland? Shippers can be brutal but their concern is mainly to get it where it is going, in a hurry. Very little thought goes into 'I better take it easy with this one, maybe it's not packed good'. That's your job, do it well. If you are only selling to make money and you don't really care about your stuff after it is sold, you won't be here long. I bet about 30% of all the merchandise sold on eBay is going to be sold again by the buyer, many of these buyers have two accounts, one for buying one for selling, and are not afraid to leave negative feedback for the smallest reason. If you priced it right, communicated well and shipped it fast and packed it poorly you should be hearing about someones dissatisfaction shortly.
