Well it all depends on the model you got. How many GBs it is. Sony real messed up with making this system. So I will give you the run down. Do to the riots to get more models out. I mean they were going from $6,000-10,000 on ebay the day it was released. I was shocked in amazement

PS3 20GB model only plays Playstation 3 Games
PS3 40 GB model will play PS1 & PS3 games , but not PS2
Now the 60 GB model is totally reversable will play all games.
PS3 80 GB System is as well and plays the blue-ray HD DVDs.

So all new models should be reversable. You can always go to the official playstation website to see if you games are backwards compatible as well
