Did you know that on average 80% of autographed memorabilia sold on eBay is fraud?

If you didn't know this, do not worry because you’re not alone. Unfortunately this is the case, so therefore, how can one protect him or herself and make sure the item they want to purchase is authentic. The following is a brief but very useful checklist of information that everyone should know when thinking about purchasing autographed memorabilia. However, before you read, breathe a sigh of relief because you are in the right place.  All of our items up for sale have been personally inspected and meet some, if not all, of our important authentication requirements. Enough mumbo jumbo, here is your buyers guide to assuring the authenticity of your purchase...

Your best bet is to purchase a certified item.  For example, when dealing with sports card, all major companies such as Upper Deck and In The Game (ITG), put out yearly sets of certified authentic cards with game used memorabilia and or autographs.  Such cards are serial numbered and usually have a description on the back of the card that reads: "CONGRATULATIONS, you have received an autographed/memorabilia card of... the authenticity of this card is guaranteed by the player and or the card manufacturer." If you are not sure, don't hesitate to ask the seller if the card and its autograph and or memorabilia are certified as to their authenticity.  However, if the item you are interested in purchasing is not certified as to its authenticity, be sure to follow these steps below...

  • Compare the autograph you’re interested in to other autographs from the same individual; the human eye can often be your best tool.

  • Make sure your item is NOT a preprint, reprint, copy, facsimile, secretarial, autopen or stamp especially photographs; many sellers may make a copy of an original and sell it without informing the buyer of such.

  • C.O.A. (Certificate of Authenticity), many sellers can write up fake certificates so be careful and look into this; a proper C.O.A. has been officially certified in the presence of a lawyer and should give proper contact information of the issuer.

  • Official Holograph Seal, when buying a autographed photograph it's a good idea to check if it has a shiny silver official holograph (usually in the bottom corner); this assures that not only the autograph is authentic, but also the photograph itself.

  • Check out the sellers Feedback rating and eBay history.  When doing so, compare your item of interest to that of another previously sold by the seller; if that buyer was satisfied, chances are you will be also.

  • Make sure that your purchase comes with a Money Back Guarantee, this will help reassure you that the seller guarantees the authenticity of the item(s), and at the very least, if you're not satisfied you can get your money back via a return policy.  Also, make sure that your item of interest is covered by PayPal's Buyer Protection Program and watch out for sellers which do not accept PayPal, even if you're interested in using another payment method.  PayPal has excellent buyer protection to get your money back even if the risky seller chooses not to cooperate.

  • Research the official PSA/DNA website, it is filled with a ton of helpful information regarding autographs; you can even send your autograph to be professionally inspected and certified.

  • Finally, do not hesitate to email the seller if you have any concerns regarding your item of interest.  If your seller is honest and worthwhile, he or she will respond promptly without hesitation.

That's it! Your buyers guide to proofing authenticity before you buy. This guide will by no means guarantee you will receive an authentic autograph, so make sure to thoroughly analyze your autograph upon arrival.  Thanks for taking your time to view this guide, get down the basics and you're well on your way to becoming a successful collector, good luck!
