When most of us think of wearing vintage or antique clothing, we think of dressing for a special occasion, like high tea in Victoria BC, or a 1920's car show. But some of the best pieces of vintage and even antique clothing can be worn casually. 1950's bolero jackets are great with capris and work fabulously for the 'lagenlook' layered styles. Vintage Hawaiian and Californian prints on tunics and skirts can be very 'Pucci'-like and look really chic with solids. Velvet swing coats are great in colder weather with just about everything, and even lacy ornate Victorian and Edwardian bodices if they open in the front can be worn with sleeveless undershirts and jeans. Some of the shorter vintage Japanese kimonos make fantastic jackets over sleeveless dresses for going out to dinner. Of course there are some rare pieces which should be worn carefully and some not at all, but there is still a whole lot of vintage out there which can be used to show your unique style to the world. This is one of the secrets of feeling comfortable in vintage; wearing it right along with your modern clothing! Adding some bakelite bracelets or a brightly colored costume necklace can pull together the 50's just-going-to-the-market look, and wearing a nice pair of shoes can help pull together the jeans and victorian shirt ensemble. Any excuse to wear vintage has got to be a good one!
