Selling on ebay is definitely a learning curve. I have learned a lot from guides that other sellers have written, and decided to make my contribution through this guide. I have recently learned that it is best to build insurance into the shipping and handling fees for breakable items. I sold a set of candlewick dishes to a buyer. Although she opted not to insure the items. I felt that they were packed exceptionally well and thought that if broken that I would not be held liable. Wrong---they arrived in several pieces, and the buyer confirmed this with photos. I contacted paypal and found much to my chagrin that paypal recommends building the insurance into the s&h, because should this buyer file a dispute, the chances are very good that it would be viewed as "item did not arrive as described". I am not in the least knocking paypal, I could see how this could be viewed this way. However for your own protection, either offer insurance built into shipping and handling or if over a certain amount of money, insure it yourself. I came out easy, in that I offered the buyer 1/2 of the amount of the item plus shipping and they accepted the offer. Even putting a disclaimer in your auction ad does not protect you in case the item arrives broken. So, I insure glassware or high priced items all the time now. Most buyers are open to insurance, you will have the occasional one that does not want it. I also learned that insurance is not available when shipping international airmail, but is included in overseas priority. So if you are shipping international, you may want to insist on priority if it is a fragile item. Thanks for viewing my guide and hopefully it saves someone the hassle of paying a buyer back for an uninsured item.
