There are many types of insect screen available, this guide is not an attempt to name any manufacturer or brand name, but to help those buyers that have questions about what type screen they should buy or what they might already have and need to replace.

Most windows and patio doors come from the factory today with "fiberglass" or aluminum screen.  

Fiberglass screen is actually fiberglass strands that are coated with plastic resin then woven into a mesh.

Aluminum screen is aluminum wire that is woven into a mesh.

Key things to look for in screen are:

•  the count or mesh size
• number of strands per inch
• given as two numbers
• width
• length
• example - 16 x 18 mesh means there are 16 strands per inch in one direction and 18 strands per inch in the other
• the tighter the mesh the more insects it keeps out
• the tighter the mesh, the lower the amount of ventilation and light it allows
• type material
• metal
• aluminum
• bronze
• stainless steel
• galvanized
• fiberglass

There are many other types of insect screen, but one of the most popular in Southern states is the solar block type.  This product has a much tighter weave and may feature solid stripes in one or both directions to block solar rays and heat while still allowing some ventilation.

Most screens are easily replaced:

1. remove the screen from window or door
2. find a large flat area flat work area
3. identify how the screen is held in place
• wood or plastic strips
• rubber or plastic spline in a slot
• if spline, check condition
• if damaged or brittle buy new
• take sample for reference
4. remove screen and whatever holds in place
5. clean out groove, check for dents or corrosion
6. stretch new screen across frame, make sure it is large enough to tuck into sides
7. Begin installing on one side and keep tight
8. install opposite side while pulling tight
9. install one end, then the other
10. trim off excess screen on all sides
11. reinstall in window
12. enjoy

Installation is the same for any type screen, just remember that metal screen will permanently deform when you install in groove,  fiberglass can be removed and replaced if off center or loose.
