General impact of the new shipping rates and policies of the US Postal Service beginning 5-12-2008:
1) Shipping costs are increasing significantly!
2)New policies by the US Postal Service may restrict which methods can be used to mail a package (packages - including poly and tyvek envelopes NO LONGER qualify for first class retail letter).
First class retail flats: a flat envelope that is between 11 1/2" - 15" long, between 6 1/8" - 12" high, and between 1/4" - 3/4" thick; must be flexible, rectangular, and uniformly thick. If these packages do not meet the strict requirements for First Class Retail Flats they must be mailed First Class Retail Parcel which is slightly more expensive (approximately $0.34 per ounce more - starts at $1.17 for 1 ounce).
Parcel Post: a package that weighs no more than 70 pounds, no more than 130" in length and girth combined. Machinable packages (cheaper in cost - starts at $4.55): between 6" - 34" long, 3" - 17" high, 1/4" - 17" thick, and 6 ounces - 35 pounds. If the package falls outside of ANY of the dimensions listed the package is NON-MACHINABLE and the cost to mail is higher (starts at $8.25). Balloon Rate will apply for Parcel Post pieces measuring over 84" - 108" in combined length and girth and weighing less than 15 pounds - charged the rate for 15 pound package.
Priority Mail: a package that weighs no more than 70 pounds, no more than 108" in length and girth combined (Starts at $4.80). Balloon Rate will apply for items weighing less than 20 pounds but measuring more than 84 inches in combined length and girth - charged the rate for 20 pound package. Priority Mail regular Flat Rate box: $9.80; Priority Mail large Flat Rate Box: $12.95.
