Family Room
Having a Vastu Ganesha statue or wall panel at the entrance is another antidote to all Vastu Doshas.Common sights are features like the family of wooden statues, the ecletic assortment of cushions and the burnished metalware adding a swirl of color, pattern and texture in any family room of an Indian home.Another prominent feature that you can't miss is the niches,in the great room displaying an assortment of polished brass statues, paintings and carved wooden statues.
Temple
In almost every Indian home you would find an area of worship.A mini temple called a mandir for the Hindus,an alter for the Christans nd a prayer mat for the Muslims.Hindus and Christans take great pleasure in decorating their temple or alter. Many homes have a seperate prayer room which is kept fragrant with incense and a little oil lamp burns day and night.
Bedroom
According to Vastu Shastra it is not good to use a broken bed or to place it in extreme corner of the room. Also it should be placed such that the person's head points to the south. This is because the Vastu Shastra believes the body acts like a magnet. Therefore,if the head (as the heaviest and the most important part) was towards the north it would repel against the north pole of the earth,so adversely affecting blood circulation.Mirrors are welcome in the bedroom as they are supposed to deflect the evil eye and protect the unassuming sleeper.Mostly you would find these set in wooden frames, lush with flowers and foilage, that serve as a point of focus in the room.Colorful hand-crafted patchwork from Kutch can also be seen draped over the walls or the window.
The dresser is another important piece of furniture that no home is without. The image of a beautiful woman gazing admiringly and expectantly into a mirror is one that is repeated endlessly in Indian temple decoration and enforces every women,s right to admire herself. This piece was often made of richly carved wood featuring motifs like the large, shady and luscious kalpavriksha,or the tree of life,or motifs of elephants, flowers,or fruits which are all greatly cherished.
Bathroom
The Vastu Shastra has much to say about ideal location of a bathroom within a house. It should be in the east so as to catch the mild, cleansing rays of the morning sun and flood the bathing space with light. The location is also appropriate for the hindu practice of offering prayer to the rising sun soon after one's bath.A Hindu bride is given a cleansing and purifying bath with turmeric and fresh cream after which she cannot leave her house until the time of wedding.Even today,Indian women indulge themselves with milk baths and herbal soaps, exotic scents like jasmine and rose.
Verandas and Balconies
Balconies, verandahs, and terraces should ideally be built on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, not on the south or west sides.Terraces in India are used for casual entertaining or as a vantage point from where to enjoy the wind and the view.Wheather the older bungalows or the modern homes have a veranda. These are often scattered with natural, gold or white cane furniture. Many verandas are supported by uniquely styled columns.pillars in some ancient temples of the south India have been fashioned with such combination of metals that when tapped with a thin metal rod, they each produce a different musical note.Outdoors rooms are also perfect place for positioning fountains of fern other plants.Huge urns which begain their existence as kitchen containers are now used as gleaming planters. The Urli, for example,a shallow,open-necked vessel used for making sweet rice pudding in Kerala, makes an excellent small lotus plant.
