Simple tips on improving file storage in your home or office.
1. Use Hanging Folders
Label with a main category.
2. Use Interior Folders
Place interior folders inside MAIN folder. Label each with a subcategory. Keep up to 5 interior/subcategory folder in each MAIN folder.
3. Make Use of Color
Differentiate between file categories by using different color folders or tabs.
4. Divide Files by Usage
Current files should be stored nearby in a desk drawer or next to the desk. Reference files (accessed occasionally) should be stored nearby in a file cabinet. Historical files (accessed rarely) should be stored in sturdy boxes labeled with year and contents.
5. Determine: Do You Need It?
Ask yourself: Will I refer to this paper ever again? Do I have a place to file it? If I throw it away will it be difficult for me to replace it? If the answers are no, toss it.
