Gable vents and louvers have been providing ventilation for homes year round for hundreds of years.
Recently many builders have eliminated vents and louvers in favor of ridge and soffit vents.
While this may look good on paper and seem to be less expensive than installing gable vents, many homeowners are learning otherwise.
Lack of proper ventilation in attic and crawl spaces can lead to moisture problems such as mold and ice formation.
And not just during summer months while air conditioners are running, but also during winter months when outside air and inside air temperatures very greatly.
Ridge vents and soffit vents provide ventilation:
- as long as they are free and open
- when they are not covered with ice and snow
- when they are not covered by loose insulation
- when they are properly installed
But, ridge and soffit vents provide no cross ventilation and total air movement is much less than recommended in the past.
Improper ventilation can lead to:
- cupping and premature failure of shingles
- may void some shingle warranties
- condensation on interior of roof surfaces
- mold and mildew growth
- higher heating and cooling bills
Homeowners should always consider adequate attic and foundation ventilation as essential to long term useful life of their homes.
Modern true gable vents combine architectural accents with excellent ventilation, reducing energy costs, and adding to curb appeal of homes.
Ask your builder to include real gable vents in your new home, years from now you will be glad you did.
