Alot of times on ebay you will sellers with great deals on an entire anime series- they will have the entire series on sale for a fraction of the US retail price- that is the first hint that is an import and not the domestic US release. Also the language options usually contain Chinese dialogue or Chinese subtitles- hint number two that is an import. Imports can be a great cheap way to add to a collection but unless it has an option for English dialogue it maybe hard to understand (because if it only contains English subtitles but not English dialogue the subtitles are probably very poor English- usually what happens is that the original Japanese is translated into Chinese and then the Chinese is translated into English). Also sometime the quality can be poor. I have gotten some great import items but I have also gotten some imports that are so bad I can't even watch them. My best suggestion is to buy domestic release titles or look for dvds that have English subtitles and English Dialogue.
