Illy Art projects
Taste and beauty are inseparable
illy has chosen art, literature and creativity as the languages to express its values and philosophy, for a complete coffee experience involving the eye and the mind.
It all began in 1992, with the first collection of designer cups entitled “Arts and Crafts”, which combined coffee with the aesthetics of the cup. Since then, illy has established a strong bond with the art world, constantly adding new encounters between the good and the beautiful.
And now, in cafés you drink coffee in a designer cup and read a whole story in a short coffee break. While the images created from the encounter between Salgado and illycaffè narrate journeys and in turn travel the world in newspapers and museums.
The good and the beautiful, illy and art, to continue work on a pair bonded in rich emotion, for all the senses. An ancient philosophical concept “kalokagathia” teaches us that taste and beauty are inseparable: what is good cannot but be beautiful. In its pursuit of this ideal, for fifteen years illy has been actively contributing to the spread of contemporary art, supporting artists and international shows, from James Rosenquist’s “The Nineties” and Bob Rauschenberg’s “Rauschenberg at San Lazzaro”, to David Byrne’s “Your Action World”, and “Minimalia: an Italian vision in twentieth-century art” at the PS1 in New York. In 1997, 2003, 2005 and 2007, the company was the main partner of the Venice Art Biennale.
Flanking the large exhibitions, illy carries out research projects dedicated to young artists in conjunction with organizations such as PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, the Central St. Martin’s College in London and the Fondazione Pistoletto in Rome, as well as with some of the major contemporary art fairs, with which it has started up partnerships for the establishment of the “illy award for young contemporary art”. Among the contemporary artists illy collaborates with are Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jannis Kounellis, James Rosenquist, Daniel Buren, Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons and Robert Rauschenberg.
