If you own a truck you should also own a First Aid Kit!

We have driven everything from mini-pickups to tractor-trailers.  We’ve been first on the scene at accidents.  We’ve been places loading or unloading when people were hurt including ourselves.  If you use your truck hard like we do ours you’ll need a good first aid kit sooner or later.  We’ve hauled everything from Stock Cars to baled hay and we’ve needed one any number of times.
***
We didn’t have one.  We used dirty rags for bandages, water for eyewash, and nothing for antibiotics.  Luckily we never had to give CPR.  It would have been risk infection with something nasty or stand and watch until the EMT’s arrived.
***
Some of the things that happened to us probably seem funny when you are not involved in the action.  One time when we were hauling hay the wind blew chaff in my eyes.  We hauled scrap metal and that led to many small, and a few large, cuts, pinches and burns.  Whatever you use to tie down your load can hurt you.  Ropes can burn you and chains and binders can pinch you to the point that you bleed.  Even strap tie downs aren’t harmless.  I saw an angry man rip a nail off on one once.  Getting the tie downs positioned on the load or getting them out of the way can lead to cuts and scrapes.

I haven’t even mentioned all the fun things that other people can do to you.  They can run stop signs in front of you.  They can wander into your lane when they are coming at you, pull out in front of you most anytime from the most surprising places and otherwise force you to hit them or spill your load.  The first problem with hitting them is bleeding from broken glass cuts or airbag injuries.  It gets worse from there.

Trucking is not for the faint of heart.  Be careful.  Always plan as far ahead as you can see.  Keep your truck and trailer in top condition, especially brakes and even more especially trailer brakes.  Assume that anyone not driving a truck never saw one before therefore will do anything but the right thing.  Finally, carry a good first aid kit.  The life you save may be your own or, if your they ride with you, one of your loved ones.  Check our eBay store for a good example of a trucker’s first aid kit.
