 Identifying Whizzed Shield Nickels

I thought I would use this coin as a teaching tool for some of those who do not know about whizzing. Whizzing is a method of improving the appearance of a coin using mechanical methods such as a rotary tool and a fine wire brush. This coin was purchased as an un-graded coin with 302 x 302 pixel photos. The photographs below were taken using a 60x and 200x magnification.

At first glance this coin appears to have a large amount of luster with fairly clean fields. Very nice eye appeal overall.

After the initial glances at the coin I decided to actualy view the coin properly with incandescent lighting and a 5x magnifier. To my surprise the coin showed signs of enhancement through artificial means, or 'Whizzing". Notice the marks just above the star tip. Photo Taken at 60x, Visible with a normal eye loop if you are looking for alterations!

"CA" of "America" in the motto. Notice the extra metal build up around the serifs on the "C". This is very common on whizzed coins and a quick way to spot them. Some of the later photos will show varying degrees of extra metal.

The reverse of the coin was nothing compared to the alteration details found on the obverse. Lets take a look at a few signs to look for on the Obverse of altered Shield Nickels.

Circular pattern marks just above the top right leaves. Note the varied depth of marks due to changes in the applied pressure. It would appear that our alterer is growing a little tired!

Enlarged View of the re-cut shield lines on the upper Shield. Note the flat box shaped lines, along with the marks coming over the line edges. The depth of the Shield lines vary depending on the Width at that point indicating a tapered cutting tool or disk.

By now the patience has completely worn out and little attention is placed on detail and the overall appearance. Here are the final alterations made to the coin, note the extreme buildup of extra metal around the lettering. This extreme buildup is caused by a heavy hand and little care.

"GOD" from Obverse motto. Very little care was taken on this final whizzing.

It is my observation that  the alteration began on the reverse, since there are less obvious mistakes there. As time went on the alterer became tired and heavy handed causing the larger mistakes on the Obverse.

Please note that most collectors would never notice or see some of the details and alterations shown here. I have used specialized knowledge and photo equipment to provide you with an educational tool.

I would like to thank the ANA for providing me with the Numismatic knowledge to enhance the hobby for fellow collectors. Please share your knowledge with others!

Over the past several months we have examined quite a few other shield nickels sent in by readers who have made online purchases. I am afraid to report that 9 out of 10 shield nickels we have viewed were also altered. Please be careful when purchasing shield nickels online and always shop with sellers who offer a return policy.
