Identifying SYRACUSE CHINA Restaurant Patterns Guide # 6

Syracuse China began operation in 1871 as Onondaga Pottery Company (OPCO) & still continues to produce china today in Syracuse New York. They are most widely known for their restaurant, hotel & railroad dining car china, although they have made fine china also. I will be writing several guides to try to help you as a buyer or seller identify some of their patterns & designs. They have made thousands of designs & it would be near impossible to identify them all. I have been selling Syracuse China on EBAY for about 5 years. SADLY I have NOT saved all of my pictures. I just recently decided to start saving them so I could write a guide. Therefore my pictures are limited. Each EBAY guide can only have 10 photographs each. This is the main reason I have to divide up the patterns into seperate guides. It may take me awhile to get all the patterns I have listed, as I have to do this in my spare time (of which I do not have much!) My first guide was on Railroad China patterns, the second guide was on more popular designs. The third on Restaurant & Hotel Designs. FRED HARVEY'S  EL TOVAR HOTEL

Fred Harvey opened the El Tovar at the rim of the Grand Canyon in 1905. This Grand Canyon landmark was named for Spanish explorer Don Pedro de Tobar, who reported the existence of the Grand Canyon to fellow explorers. The El Tovar dining room is considered the top dining experience at the Grand Canyon.Shiny black rim on plate has an inner & outer metallic gold pinstripe. The center features the El Tovar crest. Gold lion tops the black knight & shield

FRED HARVEY BERKELEY

This is Syracuse's Berkeley pattern, most often seen on the "square" trend shape. Pretty pink cherry blossom I believe. According to Barbara Conroy's Book Restaurant China Volume 1, this stock pattern was used at Fred Harvey Restaurants along the Santa Fe routes.

The Jonathon Club

The Jonathon Clubis in Santa Monica California. The Jonathan Club is a prestigious Los Angeles private social club founded in 1895. The club was originally for "men only".

SWEET GEORGIA BROWNS DETROIT MICHIGAN

According to their website Sweet Georgia Brown is Detroit’s signature location for upscale dining with a classic southern flair. Their logo features a piano & the wording "Fine Food and All That Jazz" The china also has a chocolate brown pinstripe along the rim.

HOT STACKS Pancake House

The HOT STACKS Pancake House Restaurant is in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.The name is a turquoise blue color with a burgundy & grey stripe below writing.

Giorgio's Restaurant

There pattern has a burgundy red free form stripe around rim & a small flower sprig at the bottom. Topmark says Giorgio's. I am unsure exactly which Giorgio's Restaurant these are from. There is one in Clifton NJ, one in Greenbrae, CA, Baltimore MD, Wilmington NC, & Baiting Hollow NY to name a few. If anyone happens to know please email me.  

STATLER HOTELS

Ellsworth Statler built his first Statler Hotel in Buffalo New York  in 1907.  Unlike most other hotels of the early 1900s, Statler's hotels,  had many rarities such as private bathrooms, personal telephones, and later, radios, in every room. Statler Hotels included these locations:

THE BALSAMS Dixville Notch NH

The 115 room The Balsams opened 1895 in Dixville Notch. It is now a grand four-seasons resort with 375 rooms. Design has Pine Tree logo topmark & 2 dark green pinstripes.

Royal Montreal Golf Club

The Royal Montreal Golf Club  was founded November 4, 1873 making it the oldest golf club in North America. The pattern features the Golf Club crest. Crossed golf clubs are surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves & topped with a crown, all in gold. The china has a deep burgundy rim with gold pinstripe.
