The one thing card collecting has over other investments is the sentimental attachment.  The one thing I would highly recommend is getting insurance for your investment.  Card collections are not covered under homeowners or renters insurance.  A separate policy is needed.  You can add a rider to your homeowners or renters insurance which generally is quite high. Most companies will require an extensive inventory list in addition to being  appraised. 

     An  alternate policy can be purchased online from a reputable insurance company that specializes in collections auch as cards, coins, comic books and even your jewlery.  It comes at a fraction of the cost compared to a rider policy.  They also can combine all your collections into one simple policy.  It might not replace all your hard work and memories but it can give you the resources to begin a new collection in the event of an unforseen tradegy.
