I Need A Computer But I'm On A Budget !!
I have found that the vast majority of people don't need the most advanced computer... nor do they need the most modern of machines. In most instances, it seems that people want to be able to take care of their personal affairs on the machine, maybe surf the web a bit, check email, swap pictures or they have a 6 year old that they want to get started on a computer. In these instances, it is my recommendation that they save their hard earned money and buy a decent used brand name computer system.
A good and decent used computer with an Intel Celeron processor can be bought for less than $50. A perfect Pentium III based machine can be bought for less than $75. When you can do this and pick up a monitor for less than $35 in most instances, why buy new?
There are hundreds of companies, (if not thousands), specializing in the remarketing and recycling of used computer equipment. Here in Dallas, Texas, there are vendors in every part of town... in many instances several within a block of one another.
The recycling of older equipment is good for the environment and it makes good fiscal sense to save money.
Unless you are going to be a 'power user', more than likely an older machine will serve your purposes just fine.
With those savings in mind, I recommend to my clients that they invest in DSL service or broadband services through their cable provider such as Comcast. (Dial up internet service stinks... it's just too slow). It is very frustrating waiting on a page to load. And, if you have a friend send you a picture via email... you could be waiting hours for it to download through a dial up service.
If you are going to buy a used machine... keep these minimum requirements in mind:
1.) Type Of Processor (Intel Celeron; Intel Pentium III; AMD Duron; or AMD XP Athlon)
2.) Speed Of Processor (500mhz or faster)
3.) Video Memory - (at least 8mb + but look for 32mb)
4.) Amount Of RAM/Memory (128mb +)
5.) Hard Drive Size (6gb is fine... but if you are storing music or videos... get a larger drive)
6.) Optical Drive (cd/rom, cd/rw, or dvd/rom)
7.) Sound Card (not all systems have them but you want it)
8.) Network Card (10/100 is fine)
9.) Modem (v.90 or v.92 only needed if you will use dial up services)

Do you find that you need to purchase a computer but do not have the budget or money to pay for a new one? Or, are your kids growing up and needing a machine but you don't want to sink a fortune into something they may destroy the first week? (It seems that kids as young as 3 yrs old are starting to use computers.)
