Hyphy - the Latest in Hip Hop Fads
I believe that a lot of the music on the radio these days is not
good music at all. I do not hear a lot of songs that I can just bob my
head to and get lost on the beauty of the rhythm and the melody. The
other day, I was riding in my friend’s car and since he did not have a
CD player, I asked him to turn on the radio. He switched the knob to
Wild 94.9 and as soon as he did that, this song was on the air that
caught my attention immediately. The melody had grabbed hold of my ear
drums, and even though the song was pretty simple, it had a real catchy
sound that I could not ignore. My buddy told me that the kind of music I was listening to was hyphy. To those who don't know, please read the following:
Hyphy Movement Defined (Source - wikipedia):
The word Hyphy was originally coined by Keak Da Sneak. If someone was hyphy, they were reacting spontaneously to the music. Alternately, it is based heavily around partying and having as good a time as possible.
A particular feature of hyphy culture in the bay area are sideshows or sydeshows , when one or a series of cars perform the extremely dangerous stunt of doing multiple doughnuts in their car by braking and turning at incredibly high speeds. Hyphy culture, like much of rap culture, also endorses greatly the heavy usage of illicit substances. Dancing and partying, too, are an important aspect of hyphy culture. "Going Dumb" refers to someone enjoying themselves by acting carefree and relentless.
