The solution to upgrade PPC 2002 to PPC 2003 is one and it is like a hack.  Follow the steps to remove PPC2002 and installl PPC2003 on your Axim X5

1- Download the Image file of PPC2003(A05) R64365 from
h ttp://www.cdaschools.org/tech_staff_devel/IALTA/files/R64365.EXE

2- Open this file to extract the files contained
3- Format the CF card
4- Go to the folder where you extract the files and copy to root of CF card the .img file
5- Remove Backup Battery and leave removed, dont insert
6- Remove Main Battety and insert again
7-Insert the CF card with the .img file into your Axim X5
8- Make this combination of Keys: Push POWER + SCROLL IN BUTTON + RESET + CONTACTS BUTTON
9- Let from push POWER and RESET BUTTONS but mantain Pushed SCROLL BUTTON and CONTACTS BUTTON for 20s
10- Soon you will see a white screen with information about Rom and Ram. This is the boot of the pocket. It will detect the .IMG file from CF card and will continued erase the ROM and copy the new ROM from CF Card.

how to go back to PPC2002?

1) Download the 'Dell Axim X5 ROM Update for Pocket PC 2002, v05200300EN, A02' (R63937.EXE) from the Dell support website at

2) Run R63937.EXE to extract the files.

3) Copy the extracted file P25_NK_H_05200300EN.IMG into the root directory of a Compact Flash (CF) card.

4) Ensure the battery of your X5 is fully charged.

5) Insert the Compact Flash card into your X5.

6) Now, this is the hardest bit, the Dell boot loader needs to be started with the following key sequence (a) press and hold Contacts (b) keep Contacts pressed and now push in the Scroll Dial until it clicks (and hold it there) (c) press and release the Reset button - keep Contacts and the Scroll Dial pressed (d) hold Contacts and the Scroll Dial for 10 seconds and the boot loader will start. The boot loader has a white background and tells you what it is doing - detecting the ROM on the CF, verifying, erasing the X5 ROM, copying in the new ROM and then restarts the X5 with PPC2002 when it is done, Yippee!
