As most are discovering a First Edition book is of no real value if its not a "1st print". A book can be only be classified as a TRUE First Edition if it's a First Printing!
"First printing" How can I tell if my book's a 1st print? Great question! That'll be found on the copyright page! You can usually find this within the last few lines of page.
You'll see a cluster of numbers that look simular to "9/9 0/0 01 02" . This is NOT the printline. It's actually the years the publisher plans to print that particular book. The PRINTLINE will be the numbers immediately to the LEFT.
There are several variations of printlines, depending on the publisher. I'll give you two examples. [ 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 ] or [ 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 ].. Please remember, no matter what sequence, the lowest number is your printing. in the above example it's #1 indicating a 1st print. If the numbers were to read 30 29 28 27 26 25 it would be a 25th printing.
