Update: These hijackers have apparently changed their MO and alot of the stuff in this guide may not be as important now but I am in the process of figuring out their new scam way and will post it here.
The main thing that ive noticed with these hi-jackers scam is that they have QUIT using the BIN auctions. ALWAYS check the sellers feedback because most of the time it will not have anything to do with buying and selling coins.
Stolen ID auctions has become a very serious problem on Ebay in the Buy it Now coin catagory. Here is are some pointers on how to spot a stolen ID auction.
They list the (so called) coins using 24 hour auctions and the BIN price and the opening bid are pretty close together. (they want to rip you off quick before Ebay has time to cancel the items)
The shipping will be listed high for a coin (usally 8 to 17 dollar and even one that charges 22-23 dollars) and most of the time they will use EMS shipping service (Dead giveaway the coin is in China)
They usually use the same pictures over and over with each ID they steal. Sometimes it is easy to tell the coin pictured is a fake and other times they steal someone else's pictures of legit coins and use them.
Sometimes they use symbols like $$$ or ~ ~ or ^^ or ## in the title.
Another way to spot these stolen IDs is to look at the so-called sellers feedback and 99% of the time it will not have anything to do with buying or selling coins and alot of the time show a lack of activitity.
Something else I have noticed if you right/click on the pictures in these stolen ID auctions and go down to properties alot of the time the URL will be "inkfrog meiguorouji" or " inkfrog wendihanhan" or "photobucket nihao8899" or "auctiva.com/imgdata/2/8/0/2/8/1/webimg/28591659" or replica-paradise.com/Gallery/albums/album02/ It looks to me like Ebay could figure out a way to block their ISPs period and at least they would have to come up with something different to try and rip folks off.
I have started to find phishing auctions as well in the BIN coin catagory. These auctions will usually have a picture of a naked woman in the search results and will usually have some kind of sexual title and looks very bad out of place in the coin section or any other section on Ebay. When you click on the auction it takes you to a fake sign-in page and if you sign in they have your ID (DO NOT SIGN IN AND REPORT THE ITEM NUMBER) You can find the item number WITHOUT clicking on the link just move your mouse over the aution title and look at the bottom of your screen.
None of these things listed makes a ID stolen but a combination of these is a sign it is a stolen ID.
I hope this helps to keep someone from getting scammed by these crooks and thats what they are crooks PERIOD................
Keep in mind the saying if it looks to good to be true it most likely is and keep those passwords private so these crooks have nothing to work with.
Below are pictures these crooks use and below the pictures are a couple of the descriptions these crooks use at times.
Here is word for word the auction description one of these stolen IDs use everytime with stolen pictures:
I have recently aquired a rather large coin collection that was partial payment to a lawyer who handled a large estate sale. These coins are stunning, many would grade very high if certified. Morgan Silver Dollars in grades such as MS66, MS67 and MS68 are worth thousands of dollars. I am not a professional grader so decide for yourself on the grade, but I can assure you this is a very nice coin. Good luck with your bids!! and look out for more of these gems as I am able to put them up. I have already found many coins that look BU (brilliant uncirculated) AU (almost uncirculated) and PL(proof like) in many key dates such as: (1878, 1879 CC, 1880 CC, 1880 O, 1883 S, 1889 CC,1893, 1894, 1895, 1901, and 1903) I will be selling many of these as I have the time so please check back! Thanks for considering my auctions and good luck!
Here is another word for word description that is used over and over: Description
"COIN IS ORIGINAL AND AFFORDABLE, DON'T SELL YOURSELF SHORT AND SETTLE FOR A CLEANED COIN, actual coin is nicer then the pictures, I only buy the nicest coins available. I sometimes go through hundreds of coins to find a few that I'll buy. Experience of over 30 years in the business as a dealer and collector. Remember buy the coin not the holder and reject any coin that does not appeal to you. Money back guarantee with the item still in it's original holder. Please bid accordingly, take a look at my other auctions. Serious bidders only, please. Personal checks are accepted but need seven days to clear before I ship your item. Insurance is required on all items. I will not ship anything without insurance. Good luck and thank you for looking at my auction!! :)"
I find the statement " DONT SELL YOURSELF SHORT AND SETTLE FOR A CLEANED COIN" funny. It translates to "Buy my fake China junk like my 1903 CC Morgan" LOL
