FORMAL DINNER SETTING:
The ever-important formal dinner – this could be a business gathering held at your home, a special holiday meal with dear family or friends, or other equally important celebration. Either way, this is the time you want to dress your table to impress your guests and to create an ambiance that will be pleasing to your guests and enhance the foods being served. Here are some guidelines to help make your formal dinner a memorable occasion & success!
Starting from left to right, we have the bread & butter plate along with a butter spreader knife. This is perfect for a dinner roll or other bread. The ever-important napkin should be a neatly folded cloth or you can use a coordinating napkin ring. Feel free to get creative with your folded napkin shape or just use an appropriate napkin ring. Next is your flatware to the left of your plate. This begins with a salad fork, then a dinner/place fork, and finally a dessert fork. If you do not have dessert forks, you may use an additional salad fork instead. Or you may bring out the dessert utensils when the dessert is served. The center of your setting will be your service plate. A service plate or charger is typically larger than your dinner plate and is used only for decorative purposes. Food will not be served on top of the charger, instead piece type used for each course (plate or bowl) will be placed atop the charger and then removed when that course is over. Typically a first course will start with a soup or salad, therefore this will be the first piece placed upon your charger. You may use a salad plate if no soup will be served. The dinner/place knife, a teaspoon, and a place/oval soup spoon makes up the right side of the flatware located directly beside the plate. Although it is not pictured, you may also include a cup and saucer for tea or coffee and a teaspoon for stirring placed right above the flatware on the right hand side. Some may prefer to serve coffee or tea later with dessert either at the table or in a formal living or conversation room. And lastly, we have your glassware for your water and wine. If no wine or only one type of wine will be served, then you may omit a wine glass and add an iced-beverage glass for iced tea or other beverage.
