Most printer manufacturers sell their printers at a loss so they can make money on ink later. Consumers don't realize that they're paying 25 cents or so a page for ink. There are two ways to get around this:
- Buy a laser printer. Black and white laser printers cost as little as $100 and can often print for less than five cents a pager.Color laser printers run about $300 and print for about a nickel a page too. I recommend the Xerox 6130 color laser printer, which prints for abotu a nickel a page.
- Get an old Canon inkjet that can use "fake" ink without bothering with a microchip. I recommend something like a Canon Pixma MP780. The newer Canons include microchips that make it harder to use non-canon inks. You can get a 40-pack of MP780-compatible ink on Ebay for $35, cutting your cost down to a nickel a page or so. I've used "fake" ink with my MP780 for years without any trouble. You do have to replace the print head on these every couple years, that costs about $50 and it's an easy swap-out.
