Next to improper grading the biggest problem I have with buying records on ebay is improper shipping. To properly ship a record first use only a high quality mailer designed for shipping records. Don't settle for the cheap record mailers -- I recommend 200# test brown corrugated cardboard material mailers . I tried some of the lower cost mailers and as the saying goes you get what you pay for .
The next step is taking the record out of the sleeve for shippping. This prevents the record from sliding around inside the sleeve and causing a seam spilt dreaded by collectors.
When you fold the mailer it is very important that the corners on the mailer are SQUARE . A perfect square corner will take much more abuse during shipping.
Now tape the mailer very well and most importantly DOUBLE TAPE the corners BOTH ways . This makes the package much much stronger --- just a few pieces of extra tape makes an unbelievable difference in strength.
Cardboard filler pads placed on both sides of a record will make the package even stronger but they add a good bit to the cost of your packaging AND to the cost of shipping especially if shipping internationally. International packages get poor treatment and about 80% of the records I buy internationally arrive with damage! Offering the option of extra packaging with the filler pads is awalys a good idea but just remember it can add $3.00 to the cost of mailing internationally when you consider cost of the pads + extra weight of the package.
