While shopping for a replacement keyless entry fob remote thing for my 1997 Ford Escort, I was surprised to see that people are charging a couple of bucks to give you instructions on how to program your fob. This seems wrong, since the whole procedure is quick and simple. Most dealers will do it for you or at least tell you how to.
These instructions worked on my 1997 Ford Escort Wagon, using TRW brand original ford remotes:
The process will reset the car to just the remotes you activate, not allow you to add an 'additional' remote, so have all your remotes handy.
1. sit in car, put key in ignition and turn key from off to accessories (don't go all the way to cranking then engine). Do this 3 or 4 times relatively rapidly - don't have a coffee between turns.
2. The doorlocks will go up and down. This is your signal to press lock or unlock on your remotes. The act. of getting the door locks to go up and down following the 3 key turns allows you synchronize your remotes when you press the buttons on them.
Hope this helps, you don't need to pay your dealer or download expensive instructions - at least not for TRW remotes in Ford Escorts made in 1997. This probably works for other cars too!
