Now of course being an artist , I will be partial writing about art , and yes like anybody writing a guide ,I would like you to take a sec to look at my stuff! That being said here's some pointers.
First some color theory ; you have two quality of color , COOL; blues , greens , certain grey.... WARM; reds , oranges, yellows , browns... Cool color recede and Warm advance (visually of course) .So a painting with a lot of warm colors will radiate warmth and will give a cozy feeling to the room, cool colors will open up the space and create a visual hole in the room and give an airy feeling.
When you pick a painting you can choose to complement the room , using COMPLEMENTARY COLORS ; red/green . blue/orange . purple/yellow OR THE SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY ( you can go to your local art supplies store and buy a color wheel for few bucks and start the learning process, it is fun and easy). Using a complement stands for STRONG CONTRAST.
I prefer to work on HARMONY (same family of colors) using different shades(color toned down with a little black) and tint ( color lighten up with a little white} and pick up to 3 harmonies that is a max. For example I could have a dominant of beige in my room with off-whites and pick a painting with reds yellows browns and till and blues.
However as an artist I believe the best way to pick art , is if it speaks to you .If it makes you feel something , create a reaction , moves you , amuses you , intrigues you.The art should do that for you and by choosing something you like and care about you can't go wrong , it's your place it should reflect your taste!
Decorative art is art that doesn't go beyond the eye. That stays at the surface of the retina and never reach your heart and soul . The Art of heART or the heART of ART pretty closely related words I'd say.....So you can buy a painting that will blend in your decor or something that will make a statement or set a mood and surprise your friends.
A presto !
