Let me start off by saying that I learned the hard way. Lost two amps to the UPS gorillas. And the insurance is a joke! Everything gets denied. I shipped a vintage Fender twin reverb, removed the tubes, wrapped them in bubble wrap. Stuffed the inside with peanuts, encased the amp in a grade 4 box (70lbs or more) Lined with 2" styrofoam. Seems that a fork truck backed into the box. Broke the cabinet in half. Get this, I was told that the item has to be packed to survive a four foot drop! Nothing about being run over though.
So with that said this is how I do it now.
I remove the amp chassis completely, I remove all the tubes. I remove the speaker. I send the components in there own box. Once a package reaches a certain weight and size it cost more to send. I have found I can send 2 or 3 smaller packages for less money than one large oversized one. I do take pictures of the process as I go along, and I make sure that this is ok with the buyer, after all the buyer has to reassemble the item.
I hope you find this helpful.
