You can make highly scented candles that smell stronger than you ever thought possible!  Here's the secret...

Scented oil is fine if you want a light scent, but for the strongest scent throw, you need a FRAGRANCE CONCENTRATE.   How is a fragrance concentrate different?

A true fragrance concentrate:

  • is "thicker" than water at room temperature.  The only exception to this is the citrus based scents, which may appear thin at room temperature.  If it is watery, it has probably been diluted and is a poor value for your money.

  • will be sold in a glass bottle at best, and NEVER in a clear or "see-through" plastic bottle.  Good quality scent will degrade when exposed to light for long periods of time.  It's kind of like a fine wine.  If it's sold in a cheap plastic jug, is it really fine wine?  It's doubtful!

  • have the flash points listed, and will indicate whether or not the fragrance concentrate is safe for skin use.  Some fragrance concentrates are suitable for use in making soaps, lotions, body butters etc.

Another thing to consider is the type of wax you are using.  If you are buying from a professional candle making supply source like Brookstone Candle Supply, your wax will already have all the additives needed to bind the scent.  If your scent won't mix in to the wax well, you may need an additive like Vybar(tm) to bind the scent.  Some candle making suppliers sell basic paraffin without any additives and call it candle wax.  It isn't formulated for candles, so you have to add other ingredients to make it suitable for making candles.

If you are making soy candles, you will need to add more scent than if you are making paraffin candles.  Soy wax can take more fragrance concentrate before it becomes saturated, so you can use more to make your candle strong enough.
