I wanted to give a quick reference guide on selling baseball cards. I have been doing it on and off for almost eight years on eBay! I have listed five points below to ensure you have the best chance at making money selling cards, as well as having fun while doing it!
1. Pack ripping is always fun, but it is a gamble! The place to buy packs, boxes and cases is here on eBay, the cheapest in the planet, so if you are into pack ripping, you are in the right place. There have been boxes I purchased here for $75 and was only able to recoup $25 many times. A few times I was able to double my money spent, but I can not avoid the rush of opening packs not knowing what you will get!!! This is not the best option for making money, but it sure is FUN! The best way to make your money back in this case would be to sell your big hits - if any - first, then trying to complete a base set. Inserts always command some premium, so sell those quickly as well.
2. Buying on eBay to sell on eBay. Sounds funny huh? Well I pretty much do just that. I purchase LARGE lots on eBay for 10% BV or less - they are quite easy to find - then break it up into smaller chunks and sell that way. I usually have a lot of oddball stuff that I unload in one lot, then put packages together. What works the best for me are game used lots. I get 25 star, rookie, or insert cards, add a game used card, and sell them in lots. I usually sell about 70 - 100 lots each time I list.
3. Selling by player. There are a lot of player collectors on eBay. Big hitters of course are Mantle, Pujols, Ruth, Bonds, Ichiro - but you can pull in some nice cash from guys like Mattingly, Ripken, Clemens, ect... I usually pull these guys out and sell them seperately for some nice scratch.
4. Selling by team - I am not a big seller by team, the only teams that move are Yankees and Red Sox. Occasionally, I will put on 100 Yankee cards, and they pull in $10 or so. Not bad when you are paying pennies per 100 cards!!!
5. VINTAGE - Here is where the money lies. Take a look at baseball cards from the 50's...many of the large lots you can find on eBay have loads of 50's cards in them - BUY these lots. Groupings of 5 - 10 50's cards can fetch some real cash. Serious baseball card collectors go for these cards since they are a sure thing. Inserts and flashy cards today may be worth 10% in 2 years - not cards from the 50's or even 60's!!! There have been lots I purchased on eBay and paid for the entire lot just by selling all the pre 1970 baseball cards, and I mean big lots that had loads of autos and game used cards. This process is the biggest money maker on eBay!!! Once you make your first purchase, keep good records of how you do, and make sure to roll all of your profit into the second lot you purchase. Do that a few times, and you will be using solely profit to purchase large lots on eBay. Remember, do NOT pay over 10% BV for these large lots. You are hoping to get between 15 - 25% BV, so do not let your profit be eaten up!
