- 8-10 large flavorful apples such as Rome, McIntosh, Macoun or Granny Smith, quartered and cored
- 1-1/2 cups water or apple cider
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4-1 cup white sugar
- fresh lemon juice
- Peel the apples, core them and then cut into quarters.
- Combine the apples in a large saucepan with the water or cider, sugar and lemon juice; place pan over low heat.
- Cook, stirring occasionally until the apples are tender for 20-30 minutes. Mash up large pieces of apple in the pan with the back of a wooden spoon. Leave it chunky for best flavor.
- Cool mixture slightly before eating. Refrigerate to enjoy at a later time.
