This technique can be used in altered book covers or decoupage boxes lids or wherever you like.
Supplies
Book cover or box lid
A piece of mat board
White PVC glue (Elmer’s)
White latex paint
White dimensional paint
Gold ink
Brown antiquing gel or sepia oil paint

Sand the box lid or book cover. Cut a rectangular or square piece of mat board smaller than the place you are going to glue it. Glue it to cover or lid to make a relief. Mix white glue with white paint and paint at least 2 coats on the box or cover allowing it to dry between coats.

Take the dimensional paint and do drawings around the glued mat board on the cover or lid. Allow it to dry completely.

Paint the lid or cover with gold ink. I used rub and buff diluted on thinner but you can use any other good gold paint. Let it dry.

 Now use your antiquing gel. Put a small amount on a rag and rub it on the entire object. Allow it to enter the creases. Then remove the excess. The creases will be enhanced.  Let it darker or lighter. You can also use sepia oil paint.

Now glue a beautiful picture on the relief and varnish the whole piece. You will have a very beautiful object d’art completely fake!
