Rag Quilting is Easy with Basic Sewing Experience!

1. Find material suitable to rag when washed:  Vintage Chenille is tres chic right now!, New Chenille, Flannel, Satin, Heavyweight Cotton etc  Make sure material is machine washable and dryable!  Machine wash and dry all materials prior to construction to pre shrink!  You can buy ready cut squares or use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler when you buy your own fabric

2. Take two same sized quilt squares and pin them together both right side up. You can add batting by sandwiching a piece of flannel in the middle of those two pieces - this will make the edges even fluffier

3. Sew an x through the entire quilt block you just created.  You can see the x's in this close up:

4. Piece together like you would any quilt with raw edges on one side, the side you want raggy, and clean edges on the other.  Double stitch all seams to give your quilt a longer lifetime, heirloom quality.  Sew a hem around the edges using the same seam allowance that you used for inner seams. 

5. Cut through all material on raw edges only a couple of mm from seam. Make cuts only 1 cm apart.  You can also use pinking shears but subsequent washings will produce loose strings which will need trimming more than just cutting the fabric

6. Machine Wash and Tumble Dry according to fabric instructions

7. You may need to trim loose strings and use a lint roller to clean items with chenille.  You can use a fine tooth comb to clean pills off of flannel
