Pit bulls have some favorable characteristics which could make anybody fall in love, sometimes these characteristics can also work against them, being the average owner doesn't understand what the problems are. Pits are generally high energy dogs and can get into a lot of trouble if left to burn that energy on their own. They always want to please their owner and could become confused at times because their loyalty and protection could be confused as aggressiveness if not addressed in a proper manner.
THE WALK
Firm believers in the Dog whisperer, we implemented his behavior alteration method of burning the energy and becoming leaders of the pack by taking our dogs for walks. This makes a huge difference! Even if it is only for 20 minutes it gives the owner a chance to spend time with their animal, it gives the animal a chance to burn off energy and provide a chance for exercise, and it also builds the relationship between the owner and the dog, if the walk is done properly. I have found in my experience that this really helps problem behavior casued by energy to burn.
What Unused Energy can Contribute to
Before we started taking our dogs out to burn their unused energy, we had problems with them chewing everything up, from shoes to hats to merchandise, to going in the garbage to attacking the toilet paper roller. We were fed up , and sick and tired on coming home from work just to clean up another mess. So with no other options we tried Cesar Milan's ultimate conviction, burn off energy. This was the overall solution.
Banning the BSL
So we love pitbulls and would do anything to rescue one from an abusive mistreating home, but instead of blaming irresponsible owners, people as a general whole blame the breed. This breed blaming is not only placed on Pitbulls there is a whole whole list of breeds they would like to exterminate. It is your turn to do something. Responsible pet owners should not have to pay for all the irresponsible pet owners out there. BSL is unfair. What if someone decided to ban nationalities of people, everybody would think that is very wrong. Well this is the same principle. Banning a whole breed for the action or actions of a few bad seeds.
Even if you have a vendetta against a certain breed, remember somebody loves them, and the breed you love could be next.
What an owner can do to prevent your dog from adding to the BSL Hype
Keeping your Dog happy, involves keeping them safe. Safe from harm or extinction, in this case. Spay or nuetuer your animal, if their specific purpose is not for breeding, this will calm aggressiveness, eliminate health problems, and prevent roaming. The walk, when done properly, builds the relationship among owner and pet and burns unnecessary stored up energy. Finally, if you want the best for your pit do your research, if you are having any behavioral problems read about it, research it, do your part and have hope. Pits are truly man's best friend, now they need a friend. Please help keep your pitbull happy and healthy to ensure your best friend will be there for the length of their life.
