I love my dogs, I have one old and one new. When we are out and about people
always compliment me on how healthy my dogs look.
I have a tiny Boston Terrier who is 10 years old and a giant Boxer who is 2.
I'm a health nut, so I've made my dogs follow suit.
I feed them Merrick Cowboy Cookout, it s a natural blend of beef and vegetables.
I switched to this food about 3 years ago, and its really paid off. Less farts, healthier dogs.
But any high grade dog food with natural, non filler, ingredients will do.
I mix it with a bit of water and a couple of spoon fulls of the same brand of canned
meat. Only lamb or beef, never chicken [I'll explain below] this gives it a tasty gravy,
which the dogs love.
The secret is, I also add some Alta Dena [brand in health food stores] plain yogurt to their food,
and canola oil. No digestive problems and they have wonderfully rich coats, and no flaking.
Just to mix it up a bit, I occasionally add vegetable soup [made from scratch], oatmeal or rice
if I've made it for myself.
I feed them twice a day. Don't over feed your dog. Fat dogs die young. Tragic but true.
They will get used to the amount you feed them. Read the bag for the proper amount for your
dog's weight. If he/she starts to plump up, cut back.
My BT will only eat what she needs, but the Boxer will eat anything that even
resembles food, so for his breed, known to be over-eaters, he can't have the
food out. When you leave food out, you give your dog the 'okay' to over eat.
About chicken: I suffer from arthritis and so do most dogs. Consumption of chicken creates excess
uric acid in the body which effects joints, and since banning chicken from my diet, I've had
much less, or less severe arthritis pain. Plus chicken is so heavily 'drugged up' to keep them
from having disease, that it a known fact that what they eat, we eat. [Turkey is okay]
I've always had dogs in my life, and this diet has proven to be the healthiest yet.
It costs a bit more, but having healthy animals is important to me, and since I adore them
I want them to live as long as possible.
Summary:
1. Start with a good healthy dry food,
2. mix in with water and some natural blend can food.
3. 3-4 times a week add in yogurt, canola oil or both.
4. If you made healthy food for yourself, share a bit of the leftovers with your dogs.
And exercise your dogs. Whether its tossing the ball, tug of war, or walking, a little everyday
makes for a healthy dog and a healthy owner. I call it forced recess. My dogs require some out
door activity everyday... they come and get me when its time. They are a joy!
Blessings, Max Rainet.
