Clearly, I don't know each and every trick, but I have been shopping at Baby Gap for so many years, I have learned a few things than come in handy when trying to get the best deals there. I hope this helps someone and for those who know of any other ways to save at GAP, I'd love to hear from you:)
1. Get a Gap card. While it will be yet another card in your wallet, I have found the Gap Card to be the single best way to get exclusive discounts at the Gap and its other companies (Old Navy, Banana Republic). They've changed the rewards system this past year, but it still comes to about 5% discount, which they will send in increments of $10 along with your statements as you earn them. One very IMPORTANT detail about these rewards cards, which I didn't learn until this past year, was that they can be redeemed twice, once in the store, and once online. THIS "DOUBLE-DIPPING" IS BECOMING MORE DIFFICULT AND SOME USERS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO IT ANYMORE STARTING LATE 2008, BUT OTHER STORES STILL CONTINUE TO ALLOW IT. If you want to redeem in the store first, be sure to write down the unique code that's on the back of the rewards card so that you can apply it towards your next online order. There are also different types of Gap Cards; based on spending amounts, one can qualify for a Gap Silver card, which entitles you to free shipping on any order, regardless of the amount. Furthermore, many of the Gap coupons are either exclusively for Gap card holders, or offer a better discount for card holders (for instance 15% off if using a different payment method but 20% off if paying with a Gap card).
2. Stack coupons for online orders. Sometimes, there are multiple coupon codes available, which can be stacked for online orders (most stores will not allow any form of coupon stacking, so is you have multiple coupons, it's best to order online). Not all coupons are stackable, but some are, so you could do a 20% off and then a $15 off of $75, then $20 in rewards, then enter a code for free shipping, and your savings add up nicely. This method works well for me, and I try to save coupon codes for stacking purposes especially when I am planning a large order. Typically, you cannot stack two generic codes (for instance GAPCARD10 and GAPCARD20), the system will only allow you to use one code (usually the larger discount). However, you can combine a generic code and a unique code (so GAPCARD20 and BVKK29BOLS would work) (please note these examples are not actual codes). Finally, the maximum numbers of coupon codes you can use are 5 for each given transaction, and I believe that a maximum of two of these can be % off coupons.
3. Get a "Friends and Family" coupon. If you know someone who works at Gap, make sure you ask them to give you one of these precious coupons. The friends and family sale is twice a year, typically in late summer for back to school and then during the winter. The coupon is good for 30% off entire purchase (including sale items) and the sale runs for 3-4 days (usually Thursday to Sunday). I have personally been lucky enough to be given one of these by my friends, but they are also available on ebay (what isn't, right?)
4. Make the best of the "buy two and save" discount. I always try to buy these items (tights, some tops, some socks) in sets of two to lower my price per item. It's not hard, seeing I have to girls and I buy matching outfits usually:)
5. Join an online forum Gap forum. Apart from the benefit of getting to see pictures of items yet to be released and thus being able to better plan your purchases, I have found that the online Gap forum I frequent has lots of other useful information. There is always someone who has a code they will not use, or know of a generic code that can save you money...Well worth it, and there are lots of free forums around...Just try to limit the amount of time you spend chatting about all the adorable Baby Gap clothes:)
