Don't just shop for your specific vehicle, shop smart and save.
Because keyless entry remotes are small radio transmitters they are given a number by some governing agency, depending on the country. This number is known in the US as an FCC ID. It can be found on the back of each remote. The FCC ID can be the same for remotes for different vehicles and different years. Why should you shop for a remote that has your specific vehicle listed in the auction title when you could get the same remote for less by shopping by the FCC ID rather than the vehicle?
If I do a search for remotes for my vehicle, an '01 Toyota 4runner, the prices start at about $21 shipped and go up from there. If I do a titles and descriptions search for the FCC ID needed for my remote, HYQ1512Y, I come up w/ remotes for the Toyota 4runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Avalon, Rav 4 and more. The prices then start at about $10 shipped. Searching the titles and descriptions for the FCC ID will reveal the lowest possible prices for remotes that will work for you.
If the reason you're shopping for a new remote is because you've lost yours so you can't look on the back of it for the ID, not to worry. Your local stealership...I mean dealership, should be able to tell you what you need by the VIN number. But don't tell them you need the FCC ID so you can buy a remote on eBay. Once you have the number, tell them you've changed your mind after learning of the astronomical dealer price or you forgot your wallet at home. You can then get a great price on eBay and program the remote yourself using instructions provided by the seller or found online. I hope this guide was helpful.
