Step 1: Focus on your passion
There are lots of non-profit organizations who can benefit from your expertise. Think about issues you are passionate about. The environment? Quality childcare? Girl Scouts? Making college a reality for at-risk kids? Church? Spend some time soul-searching and make sure you identify an area you feel strongly about - board work can be hard work, and you need to be committed.
Step 2: Find the right board
Spend some time looking at a variety of organizations in the area of your passion. Call the organization and ask for information on how the board is structured, what the operating principles are, and who you can talk to. Set up an informational interview with one of the board members. Be sure to ask questions such as:
* What is the role of the board in this organization?
* What is required of board members? All organizations will require a time commitment; some may require a financial commitment as well.
* How does the board operate?
* What are the decision-making processes?
* What is the leadership structure?
* How long is the tenure?
* How do you get on the board?
Once you've identified the right board, you're ready to become a part of the board.
Step 3: Make your case
Approach the board members with your request to be on the board. Create a document that summarizes your relevant experience (this should be tailored for the board; different from a job-oriented resume). Mail it or bring it with you to meet the board. Create a cover letter and/or introductory remarks that discuss your qualifications and what you will bring to the board. Be specific. Can you write a grant? Manage the budget? Provide HR support? Many nonprofit boards are looking for people who have a broad background and can contribute in a variety of ways, but who are also deep in one area that the board needs help in. Fundraising is always a good area of expertise, and it's not too hard to develop.
Be clear on the decision-making process and timing, and if you don't get accepted right away, don't give up. Stay focused and check in every few months to see if there is an opening. They'll remember you the next time they have a spot to fill.
That's it! Good luck!
