If you love art pottery but have been intimidated by the high prices it often commands, I know a way you can get original works of the potter's art without paying your children's children's children into poverty! If you live anywhere near a college, university, community center, etc., you have a rich source of possibilities for finding gorgeous, one-of-a-kind works of art.
How?
I'll give you my city as an example. In this city, we have two community centers, a university, a YWCA, and a community college. Each of those offers some classes in throwing pottery; often, the students will sell their works for very little. They also will sponsor exhibitions of local artists who sell their works for far less than you'd get in an art gallery - and many are of comparable quality. And our local YWCA even offers pottery for $5.00! Local artisans donate these works for the fundraiser for domestic violence; patrons get a spaghetti dinner and then get to take a bowl with them - all for $5.00! Some of the bowls are beautiful, others quirky - they have something to please every taste. I imagine that you could find a place near you that offers the exact same opportunity.
You may imagine that there is no way that local artists could make the same quality pieces as "pros," but I disagree. If you will just look at the picture at the top of the page - aren't the pieces impressive? Well, those were made by a local artist and sold in a local university exhibition! So get out there and find yourself your own piece of affordable art pottery!
