Brain cancer, a condition in which tumors either originate in the brain or spread there from other parts of the body, can be debilitating both physically and psychologically. The patient may lose mobility, vision or consciousness. Those caring for people with brain cancer face a unique set of challenges. The better you understand the disease, the easier it will be for you to remain calm and effective
Step 1:
Be aware that people whose heads have been exposed to radiation and those with immune disorders are at increased risk for brain cancer. Family history of cancer is a major factor. So is the presence of other types of cancer within the body, as these cancerous cells can spread.
Step 2:
Ask the patient's doctor about recommended follow-up care. You may need to bring the patient in for testing on a regular basis, as well as to support groups and other health appointments. Since cancer can spread and re-occur, follow up is especially important.
Step 3:
Commit to keeping up the patient's spirits. Choosing to care for someone with brain cancer is a big responsibility, but becomes easier when the patient's anxiety lessened. One way to care for a patient with brain cancer is to help that person stay occupied. Movies and audiobooks can help.
Step 4:
Make sure you have someone to support you and your needs. It isn't only the cancer patient who will be under a great deal of stress at this time. You may need someone for compassionate support as well.
