How to Buy REAL MOUNTED BUGS IN ACRYLIC

Hello and thank you for seeing our guide on How to Buy REAL MOUNTED BUGS IN ACRYLIC.  When buying insects suspended in acrylic you want to ask some basic questions.

What kind of acrylic is used?  As with anything, quality is the key - even for small specimens.  You do not want cloudy, streaky or feathery striations of any kind in the plastic.  We use only optically clear lucite to guarantee that your specimen can be seen from every angle - even under a microscope.

What type of insects/animals are used?  This may be a difficult question for some dealers to answer as they may be buying from third party dealers.  Some things to consider are whether the specimens are legal, endangered or harvested.  The first two conditions can be looked into by contacting the food and drug administration and/or local fish and wildlife office to see what is considered endangered and legal in your country or district.  The latter is a method of "farming" insects.  Our company is part of China's Pest Control Program where our specimens are farmed and harvested with the strictest government guidelines.  We will not sell any endangered or illegal specimens.

*We get many inquiries about Black Widow Spiders.  This species IS on the ENDANGERED LIST.  Being caught with a Black Widow Spider - in any form or condition - can cause stiff penalties up to and including jailtime.  The endangered species list gets updated very frequently so it is advisable to check it often.

What are the advantages of plastic preservation versus dried insects or liquid preserved specimens?  Dried insects, which are currently sold in a window box etc. are very pretty, but do not last very long.  They are extremely fragile and are suseptible to vibrations, mold, mildew, rot and parasites to name a few.  All this contributes to the breakdown of a dried specimen.  Specimens preserved in liquid can be toxic due to the gases given off from the item and/or the embalming fluid itself.  What if the container leaks or breaks!  Both dry and wet preserve methods can have hypoallergenic health risks and the specimens may not be able to be touched, held or viewed.

By preserving in acrylic, our insects, arthropods, mammals, reptiles, sea-life and flowers can be viewed, touched and held with no adverse effects.  Specimens are never in direct contact with the skin and  lucite acrylic is virtually indestructible-so breakage is not an issue.  As mentioned above, our products are optically ("crystal") clear and specimens can be seen from any angle.
