A cigar humidor is a serious purchase with great rewards.  Choosing correctly will likely be a lifetime purchase as a well chosen humidor will last for many years.  Choosing incorrectly will be a very expensive learning lesson,  even for that humidor which starts at 99 cents (plus $30 shipping)

What is a fake humidor?  A fake humidor is a product designed to fool you the buyer,  it looks like a humidor,  if your nose is not trained,  it might smell like a humidor,  but it is not a humidor,  it may even be advertised to include SPANISH CEDAR,  but fake humidors do not include the expensive Spanish cedar which imparts it's flavors into your cigars and regulates humidity inside the humidor.  The FAKE humidors are made from cheaper woods like birch and maple,  see the pictures below.  What is the difference of using another wood instead of cedar?  Well the inferior woods in these fake humidors do not absorb moisture,  which means your humidor will never be seasoned,  and will never be able to keep your cigars fresh.  As a matter of fact,  this wood will actually take moisture from your cigars,  leaving them dry and crumbly,  they will taste awful and worse yet that forign wood will flavor your cigars.  What is wrong with flavor,  well nothing if it is good flavor.  Every cigar manufacturer makes the cigar boxes that cigars come in out of cedar because that is a good flavor to impart on cigars,  are other woods.  Probably not,  can you imagine a cigar flavored by the aromatic eucalyptus wood?  Your cigars would taste like a halls cough drop,  good for a cough drop,  but a bad  cigar!

Now I will admit these fake humidors look nice at first glance to the untrained eye,  and they are nice boxes,  and they are suitable for storing items like paper, knitting needles and spools of thread,  but they are not suitable for cigar storage unless perhaps you smoke Philly blunts.

So how do you choose a REAL cigar humidor,  one that will last a lifetime and be a perfect place to store and possibly age your cigars?  Unfortunately to the untrained eye it is difficult to tell a real humidor from a fake humidor.  I include some pictures at the bottom which shows the differences between real Spanish cedar and the cheap wood fake humidors are made from. 1. Buy from trusted sellers only
2. If the price is too good to be true...it might be a FAKE
3. Be realistic and generous with yourself when you shop for a humidor
4. A CHEAP humidor is more expensive than a quality real humidor (consider the cost of ruined cigars)
5. A FAKE humidor will last a month or two,  a real humidor is made for a lifetime
6. A real humidor is HAND CRAFED and made from EXPENSIVE Spanish cedar.  It is OK to buy inexpensive,  but avoid buying cheap! (cheap humidors = expensive humidors)

The pictures below show FAKE humidors purchased from (name delted *) and (name deleted *)   We purchased these FAKE humidors which were advertised as Spanish cedar to provide an education to humidor buyers.  Now that we uncovered the truth,  you can buy a real humidor from an expert and leave the FAKES behind.  After we purchased these humidors,  we confronted one of the sellers of these fake humidors and they admitted they were not made with any cedar.  They have since removed the word cedar from their ebay listings. 

UPDATE:  Many have written to me to thank me for the content of this page,  unfortunately some also wrote that they were fooled by cheap price, expensive shipping and a fake humidor....
