First off, I would like to say that people who sell bootleg items should be ashamed of themselves! -Not only is it morally wrong, but it is illegal.
One of the best ways you can tell if a game is original is to look at the asking price. A lot of times the "buy it now" price will be about 5 dollars less than everyone else's. Always ask sellers where they are shipping from- if a seller can ship to you via USPS priority mail, then he probably isn't in the U.S.
Also, look at the pictures of the item. Ask for an original picture, not the stock photo. In all of my listings, I have both a stock photo (if there is one) and a picture of the actual item I am selling. A lot of times buyers don't pay a lot of attention to the small details, but for the bootleger its ok because lots of times neither do they. If you look at the bottom left hand corner of every Nintendo DS game and/or Game Boy Advance game there should be an ESRB. If there isn't one, it's a fake. 9 times out of ten they forget to put the ESRB rating on the item- they just get a picture of the item and crop it and the ESRB is almost always not there. Then, look to the bottom right hand corner to see if the official nintendo seal is there. There is also a logo from the manafacturer along the bottom and under the nintendo seal there is always a coding system that will look similar to this- (xxx-xxxx-USA). Remember- compare the picture with what other sellers are putting up for auction and if you notice a discrepancy, it is likely a fake!
If you get a game home and you look where the contacts are if there is a small rectangular hole and you can see into the cartridge, then its a fake. The only thing you should see are the copper connections or teeth as i call them.
I just hope that buyers are safe. Some buyers know they are buying bootlegs and dont care until they get one that isnt functioning correctly. What I can say is its better to be safe than sorry- I would rather spend a little more time looking around than buying something on impulse. Take your time so you don't end up being robbed by someone selling bootlegged games.
Again, if you do sell bootlegged games, I hope you get caught. You give other ebay sellers a bad name. I hope all of you buyers nothing but the best, so please watch and spend a little bit more time to gather the information you need to make an informed buying decision.
